I snapped this photo to prove to my roommate that I wasn't going crazy.

Last year - in the middle of January (and the middle of a crazy cold snap) - a battle like no other happened in my very own front hallway. I was sitting at my computer (which is in my bedroom) and decided to get up to get a drink of water. To get to my kitchen, I have to walk through my main hallway. As I turned the corner, I saw something strange. There was a wasp, lying on it's back. Obviously I was a bit perplexed by this since it was the middle of Winter...and really, how did it get into my place and why did it choose my hallway as a grave?

I felt bad for the little guy, and even though I wished I could have given it a more meaningful funeral - I grabbed a handful of tissue paper and prepared to grab the body and flush it down the toilet.

Well, that didn't happen...

As I reached down to grab him, he literally flipped over onto his legs, (I swear) made eye contact with me, and then proceeded to fly right at my face! I screamed like a little girl (yes, like a little girl) and fell back into my living room. The crazy undead wasp started to fly into the hallway light REALLY hard, making crazy noises. Apparently he woke up on the wrong side of my floor. He was quite upset. I grabbed a broom that was sitting close by and decided to charge into the fight head first. Looking back, I would have to guess the little fighter was well versed in, The Art Of War by Sun Tzu - because he dodged my swinging broom with ease, and I barely escaped his multiple kamikaze attempts.

I fell back to my bedroom to regroup. I obviously underestimated my foe...big time.

Suiting myself up in a few layers of sweaters and arming myself with a rolled up magazine (Ad Busters for those who would like to know), I ran back out.

To make a long story short - we battled for a few more minutes. I would gain ground, then he would just take it back. Finally, with a lucky blow, I took him down in mid-flight.

He was injured. I felt horrible. So I did what I had to do - I put him out of his misery.

I can't help but think I may have killed a father or brother or son. What if his family was waiting for him back at the hive.

This is in memory of the fallen soldier.

You fought well. You will not be forgotten.

R.I.P zombie wasp.
